The “traffic jam” we encountered on our walk today was a good opportunity to teach the dogs in my care good behaviour around livestock. This involved asking the dogs to “SIT” and focus on me as the ponies walked by.
It is very important to control your dogs around livestock as farmers are legally allowed to take action and kill your dog should it chase or harm their livestock. When your dog is a puppy, make sure you spend time introducing him/her to the sights and sounds of different livestock so that your dog is desensitised.
Always leash up your dogs when you come across livestock or horses to keep both your dog and other animals safe.
